Add color! Color is a great way to express your style, coordinate with your bridesmaids, and give detailed personality to your dress. Oscar de la Renta said in 1965, "I have always felt my role as a designer is to do the very best I can for a woman to make her look her best. Fashion is only fashion once a woman puts it on.” This still rings true, as every person is different.
The average bride is 27 years old, 91% had attended college, and 78% work full time. Today’s bride wants to express her personality in a world where she might be trying to follow social expectations. According to Oscar de la Renta in 2001, "A woman makes an outfit her own with accessories.” What better accessory is there then color?
"My [Oscar de la Renta 2006] designs are known for their beautiful ornamentation, details, fabrics, and embroideries – which are never more important than on a wedding dress.” One major detail is color. If you are trying to portray purity, then buy white. If you are looking for old world elegance then use ivory to express those characteristics. On the other hand, if you are trying to be refined or vintage then use champagne.
"Wedding dresses are the number one most researched items for brides-to-be and our users are always looking to be at the forefront of bridal fashion," said Michelle Preli, editor in chief of Brides.com. This should be not a surprise as the Internet is a very useful and popular tool. In viewing pictures of brides, you will notice that not every dress is the traditional white. There is nothing wrong with white, but most brides are putting a little something with it. This could be in a fabric choice, beading, lace, or color accents.
In trying to express individuality you can see how color translates to qualities. Blake Kritzberg went into great detail in the article “The Meanings of Colors in Weddings”. I have broken down the colors into basic descriptions to give you a quick glimpse.
