As the now infamous homemade balloon was making its way across the skies of northern Denver suburbs, I happened to be passing by a television that was carrying the action live. Several other people had stopped to watch, and we were all captivated for several minutes as the flying saucer landed dramatically.
I've been trying to imagine what the brainstorming process must have been in the Heene household as they apparently tried to come up with ideas for a publicity stunt. Between Jackass The Movie and America's Funniest Home Videos, it would seem that all the ideas for nutty and idiotic things to capture on video camera have been taken.
But wait - there was one thing that had not been tried! Earlier this summer, an animated feature length film about a homemade aircraft had raked in more than a half a billion dollars at the box office. There was something about transcending gravity that had a way of transfixing people's attention.
If you missed Up in theaters - and, of course, if you missed the balloon chase across north metro Denver - it will be released on DVD November 10 (Up the movie, not the video of the balloon chase). Alas, the chance to let your imagination soar is still within reach!
