With the release of This Is It Wednesday, Michael Jackson fans as well as casual spectators are faced with the decision of whether to see the final big tribute to MJ in theaters, or wait for the DVD.
Not long ago, all of us were drawn to our television sets and internet portals by an unexplainable curiousity about this man known as the King of Pop. We all knew of his music and eccentricities, but that knowledge alone was not enough to make 88 million Americans to feel compelled to tune in to watch his funeral. There was something more that escaped us for words.
This Is It beckons us to revisit the enigmatic cultural realm that grasped our collective attention in July, that unity of puzzlement that had all of us once again tapping our toes to Billie Jean and Thriller. But don't expect that this documentary will solve the mystery of Michael Jackson; I am becoming convinced that such is a mission impossible.
Seeing This Is It in theaters will recapture some of that electricity from this past summer, to be sure. Having several dozen people seated around you simultaneously sharing the silent memories that come to mind as they watch this movie on Michael's final attempt at a comeback will move you similarly to how his funeral did. But if you do not have a chance to make it to theaters, the DVD will provide an opportunity to ponder the mystery and legend of Michael Jackson in the same way that most of us experienced his life story while he was alive - on our television sets.
