If there's a good side of the recession, it's that countless companies and organizations are offering freebies. Call it goodwill, call it solidarity, call it savvy marketing... it's cool. This writer just finished his free Krispie Kreme in celebration of National Donut Day, and two nights ago gleefully slurped a modestly sized --but free-- root beer float from Sonic.

Good news for hiking and outdoors enthusiasts: the National Park Service is hopping on the free bandwagon. On the following weekends, visitors will breeze right on by that ranger hut at the park entrance:

  • June 20-21
  • July 18-19
  • August 15-16

Now don't forget that there is a significant portion of our national parks where an entry fee is never charged. So as NPS says, you can plan cheap weekends year round! But if you want to cut to the chase and see which fee-based parks specifically are participating in the fee-free weekends, click here for that list.
