Sure, the economy sucks. And that's exactly why you need to keep getting out and enjoying the recreational activity of your choice. Or, you may need to start getting outside for some good restorative play!

Let's not forget: thank goodness it's not a full-blown depression. Although by now, the majority of us are all starting to look for ways to save a few bucks here and there. As I've said before, I'm totally sold on the old German adage that "There's no such thing as foul weather- only improper clothing." Being prepared is important, no matter what the economy is doing. And you can be prepared without breaking the bank.

Here are a few sites that can help with your recreational gear needs:

  • Steep & Cheap | I check this one multiple times a day. No joke. They sell one amazing deal until it's gone. Usually in the neighborhood of 75% off. All sorts of gear essentials. To stay updated on what's for sale at any given moment, you can incessantly hit the refresh button in your browser, have it send you an IM, or have a handy desktop alert pop up.
  • Sierra Trading Post | Very user-friendly site. A few different sub-stores with tons of variety. Really reasonable prices-- something's always on sale!
  • REI Outlet | Yes, there's merit to buying local (see: Desert Rock Sports), but REI is one responsible co-op that's managed to go big while keeping its soul. Their REI Outlet website has tons of great deals.
  • Craigslist | No recession-smart list is complete without this site! Especially useful should be the "sporting", "barter", and "free" categories. Great search functionality and RSS options to make the site work for you!
  • Freecycle | Not a retail site, but a swapping community. A great resource if you're willing to do some gear bartering. No freeloaders, please.
  • Campmor | Their compact, simple newsprint catalogs were my choice reading growing up. I've since stopped receiving them in the mail to save a little paper, but I definitely keep my eyes on the website. Their sales are especially awesome!
  • Cases 4 Less | Rock-bottom deals on knives, flashlights, hydration systems, and protective cases. I'm a disciple of Pelican cases and lights for their indestructibility and innovation, and this site is the best source I've found for their products.

So, what other websites would you add to this list? Recommend them in the comments below!
