Make sure you know what you're getting into!

In commemoration of Earth Day, I'm kicking off a post series on the seven core principles of Leave No Trace outdoor ethics. I originally examined the program last weekend in this post.

Today, we're talking about planning ahead and preparing for your outdoor recreation excursions. Your ability to leave no trace is first shaped by what you do even before you hop in the car and head for the trail!

So what's in it for you?

Planning ahead allows you to focus more on enjoying your activity. You can worry as little as possible about potential problems or accidents, and there's less waste to manage and pack out.

Here are just a couple examples of planning you might want to consider:

Trip Planning

  • Does your destination and the activity you'll enjoy there match up with your desires and goals?
  • Is it a good fit for your abilities and the rest of the members in your party?
  • Do you have the right your gear for what you're planning? This ties to both safety and enjoyment!

Meal Planning

  • What packaging is required to bring your snacks and/or meals?
  • How can you minimize the amount of food packaging that needs to make it back to the trailhead with you?
  • Can your meals be cooked if there happens to be a high fire danger that puts a ban on firewood collection?
