Leave No Trace is an educational movement that that helps ensure we'll all be able to enjoy the outdoors for generations to come. The program's core values are:

  • Plan ahead and prepare
  • Travel and camp on durable surfaces
  • Dispose of waste properly
  • Leave what you find
  • Minimize camfire impacts
  • Respect wildlife
  • Be considerate of other visitors

Nobody needs rule-nazi following them on the trail or inspecting their campsite, checking to make sure each of the seven principles is followed. And thankfully, that's not what Leave No Trace is about. Sustainability is the name of the game.

I enjoy the outdoors more than most other things in life. And I really enjoy being able to bring other people to enjoy them with me. Honestly, it's my opinion that we'd be better off as a culture if we each spent a little more time in the fresh air. A population embracing Leave No Trace is precisely the way our trails and campsites and rivers and summits can handle that increased traffic.

Earth Day is just around the corner. Use the occasion to take up a new challenge while you're enjoying the outdoors: Just how minimal can you make your impact?

Speaking of minimizing impact, Los Angeles Outdoor Recreation Examiner Seth wrote about a special promotion for you  sustainability-minded outdoor shoppers...

Share your commnts below! Which of the points are you good at? Which will you work on more?
