What Not to Wear’s style experts Stacy and Clinton have said it multiple times: if you want to add visual interest to your outfits, try to work in color, pattern, texture, and/or shine. You don’t necessarily need all four, but each of these elements brings in something special and shows you know how to create a look for yourself – to express your personal style.
Metallics (usually gold, silver, or bronze) are an easy way to bring shine into your outfit. They can add a bit of sophistication or luxury to a look. Best of all, metallics are neutrals and therefore go with everything, whether they come in the form of embellishment, a pair of shoes, a bag, jewelry, a belt, or a piece of clothing.
Gold can be paired with any color or neutral, but given the popularity of the “safari” look this summer, wearing gold with other neutrals – especially white and khaki – looks very fashion-forward and put-together. The gold “goddess” sandals pictured on the left – Etienne Aigner, from Stein Mart – would look fabulous with a white sundress, or with white pants and a belted khaki jacket. You could also add some turquoise jewelry and a tan clutch with a pop of gold, like the one pictured below from White House Black Market, to add more elements of interest to the look. Don’t worry about matching bags and shoes exactly; in this case, however, the touch of gold on the clutch helps make both the bag and shoes stand out.

While gold looks fantastic with neutrals, silver looks perfect with every color. The French Market is filled with vendors selling “statement jewelry” like the necklace and earrings pictured below. Wear a statement necklace with a deep V-neck top or dress: you’ll not only make the outfit stand out, but you draw attention to your face, too. You can also add a silver clutch (the one below was purchased from www.ecoist.com and is made of silver gum wrappers!) to dress up the look for evening.
Bronze is also a neutral, but like gold, it looks best with certain colors like dark blue or green, and with certain neutrals like denim and black. While most of the above pieces are accessories, you might be so bold as to wear a metallic piece of clothing, like the Kensie leather jacket pictured here. With such a stand-out wardrobe item, though, the other pieces of your look should be more subtle: you might pair the jacket with a pair of skinny jeans and a dark top. If the jacket is too bold a look for you, you might try a pair of bronze shoes, like the Enzo Angiolini high-heeled Mary Janes also pictured below.

To some extent it’s okay to mix metallics (you might wear silver earrings with the bronze jacket, for example), but for the most part, try to keep it relatively consistent. Adding just a couple subtle touches of shine helps the outfit as a whole stand out – and that helps you stand out!
