What makes the perfect resume? Now that the employment situation has become an “employer’s market”, a well tuned resume is essential in getting the interview and landing the job. Just how important are resumes? I recently had the opportunity to discuss the topic of resumes and resume writing with Beth Colley, Principal, of Chesapeake Resume Writing Service (CRWS) located in Annapolis, MD.

Beth’s work as a Career Consultant, years of experience in workforce development and career training, sparked her passion for developing and writing resumes. Since then Beth has become a Certified Professional Resume Writer (CPRW) as well as a Certified Federal Job Search Trainer (CFJST). These credentials have branded Beth Colley an expert in the fields of resume writing and federal job search.

Preparing a resume is more than just being able to write a list of jobs on a piece of paper.  With hundreds of applicants for almost every position, employers need to look at a resume and almost instantly determine the knowledge and skill level.  Chesapeake Resume Writing Service has a well tailored approach to writing resumes for their clients. Potential clients go through a detailed process to ensure that the final product, a winning resume, is helpful in getting a job.

After the initial contact from a potential client, CRWS conducts a detailed phone screening in order to determine the current status of the client. Do they have a resume? Where are they currently working? What are they trying to accomplish? The potential client will then fax a copy of their resume to CRWS for review. After the resume has been reviewed, a project quote and questionnaire is then forwarded back to the client for completion. Finally, an in-person meeting is arranged to gather vital information necessary to complete the resume. The final resume usually takes 7 to 10 days to complete. Chesapeake Resume Writing Service recognizes the urgency needed for completing a client’s resume. They have never missed a promised deadline.

“There are challenges in writing resumes,” states Beth. For example, writing a resume for a front-line employee is sometimes more of a challenge – but not impossible. Front-line employees sometimes forget the value that they add to an organization. Sometimes they feel their job is routine and unfortunately it often reflects in the resumes that they are able to produce on their own. Front line employees have essential skills which they often do not list on their resume including; customer service, the ability to work independently, and their ability to solve problems. During the in-person interview, Beth is able to draw the relevant information needed in order to write their resume.

Resume writing is not the only service that CRWS provides. Their service has expanded to include job search assistance as well. Beth also works as an interview coach and preps applicants on interviewing skills and techniques.

While it’s sometimes hard to put numbers on the success rate of resume writing, Chesapeake Resume Writing Service has many success stories about their clients. One story that Beth shared was about a college graduate who had interviewed with a company in North Carolina. He was seeking an entry level position and had applied many times but was continually turned down. Beth worked with him in re-vamping his entire resume. As a result, not only did he get the job – but at $5000 more a year then the company normally paid any entry level hire .  His successful hire was a direct result of the work CRWS provided.

In the recent economic struggles, it’s not all about money. Beth is fully aware that times are tough and that not everyone can afford to pay for resume writing services. In order to give back to the community, Beth recently hosted a free resume writing seminar at her church. She also hopes to be able to offer additional free resume writing seminars in the future as people look for resources to help them get back into the job market. CRWS also provides research links on their website for job search assistance.

“In general, a well written resume will be successful in any type of market or economy,” states Beth. As a small business, her company Chesapeake Resume Writing Service is doing their part to help clients successfully land jobs in this difficult “employer’s market”.  Visit their website for additional information.
