Novak Djokovic of Serbia defeated world #1 Roger Federer in three sets on Sunday to win the Davidoff Swiss Indoor tournament in Roger's hometown of Basel. 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 were the scores.
While Federer came in to this week's tournament well rested, having not competed since leading Switzerland to a 3-2 win over Italy in September's Davis Cup World Group playoffs, the world # 3 Djokovic has been on a torrid pace during the fall season having claimed the championship at the China Open this past month, and survived several tough matches on the week including back to back three set wins over Swiss #2 Stanislas Wawrinka and Czech Davis Cup stalwart Radek Stepanek to set up today's final against the top ranked hometown favorite Federer. The 15 time Grand Slam champion has a long history at this event dating back to his junior days working as a ballboy, and came into today's matchup as the three time defending champion.
From the beginning it was Djokovic who was in control of the match as Federer found himself playing from behind throughout much of the contest. Having not dropped serve all week, the world #1 was broken four times on the afternoon. After the match, Federer said to reporters "I missed plenty of opportunities, I was always down in the score. Each time I swung the momentum my way, I got broken again. If I had played a bit better on the attack, then it could have made a difference. It was a close match."
With the win today, Djokovic improved his record against Federer to 3-2 on the year and claimed his fourth title for the 2009 season. He said afterwards “I tried to stop him from taking control of the match because when he does, he’s the best in the world and he can end the match very quickly,” and added “I tried to be patient, have good tactics and put pressure on him and make him play an extra shot.”
Having now won his second title in his last three events and avenging his loss to Federer at the semifinals of the US Open, Djokovic will head into the ATP World Tour Finals with both momentum and a huge surge of confidence from having persevered through three consecutive solid tests of skill and determination to emerge with the championship in Switzerland this week. The year end championships are set to begin November 22nd from London, England and will be aired by the Tennis Channel.
