Trying to run a household, as well as taking care of children, a marriage and career is like trying to walk across a tightrope. Trying to do all of this with a spouse who has to travel for his work? Often feels as if you are walking across that tightrope on a windy day.

A lot can happen in the course of a day or two, let alone a week or more. Not seeing your spouse, or getting to talk to them over the course of a few days can lead to stress within the household and marriage. Here’s a few tips on how to nurture a feeling of connection while you or your spouse is away.

1.) Sneak a card or love note into your spouse’s jacket or purse. You can even include some of their favorite candy or a gift card. I know quite a few St. Louis women who have slipped a surprise love note and a Starbuck’s gift card into their spouse’s computer bags. (My husband’s favorite candies are Necco wafers. So if he happens to see the cylinder shape in his jacket pocket, he knows there’s also a love note tucked inside.)

2.) Talk to each other on a daily basis. Make time each day or night to talk to each other. In this age of cell phones, a spouse can usually sneak in a quick call before meeting that potential client for a drink or heading back to the hotel in the car if the schedule is tight. If the cell phone battery is running out, call the old fashion way, via landline. Or look into setting up some Skype accounts for you and the honey.

3.) Earn extra points by sending a sweet email or text message. If I take our son out some place fun while hubby’s out of town, I make sure to send a photo of our son enjoying the cool activity. Hubby still gets to share in and be a part of the fun experience. If you want to send racy photos your honey’s way? Well, just make sure to let the honey know ahead of time, so he or she doesn’t accidentally open your message in front of other people. (Knowing your spouse’s boss or coworkers have seen an X-rated photo you intended for your honey? Well, that could make you feel a bit uncomfortable at the upcoming Christmas party, now couldn’t it?)

4.) When the two of you are finally reunited, spend a few minutes in “lovey mode”. Hug! Kiss! Let the other person know you’ve missed them.

5.) Schedule a date for when the two of you can reunite. Date nights alone with your honey can be a lot of fun. And if you haven’t seen each other for most or even part of the week? You’ve got that much more to catch up on, now don't you?
