Even if you are plugged into the network directly without using wifi, you can still be in danger of being listened on.
If you are at home, connected directly to your Internet Service Provider's line, you are probably safe (if you trust your service provider). However, if you are at a school or University, the network is usually extremely complex, and there may be someone up the stream viewing all your communications.
On wireless networks WEP/WPA2 only provides encryption as far as your router, after that the data is not encrypted in any particular way, so whoever stands between you and the Internet sees all of your traffic!
The best thing to do is to encrypt your communications yourself. I described this in my previous article.
Good luck and safe journeys!
