Being a lazy Sunday, Joey, Caitlin, and Isabella decided to take some records for a spin. Yes, we have talented cats. They were kind enough to share their play list with you. You may see a theme.
In all seriousness, music can be beneficial for your cat. When we listen to music, we often relax and de-stress. The same can be said for our feline friends. Now the question is what kind of music should you play for your cat?
According to www.suite101.com’s Jennifer Copley, “Austrian scientists have found that cats appear to prefer instruments such as the oboe and deep bass, as well as male voice choirs.”
By observing hundreds of cats as they listened to various types of music, the scientists noted their like or dislike of the music by whether they moved closer to or further away from the speakers.
Copley writes, “Overall, they found that cats prefer fast beats to slow beats, and deep tones to high-pitched notes.”
Some say classical music is the best for cats, while others advocate for soft jazz or good old rock ‘n’ roll. Our cats have been known to meditate to Savage Garden and Lifehouse.
Doing a search online, I came across several albums made specifically for cats. Relaxation Music For Cats by The Cat Whisperer includes songs like “Kind & Furry,” “Unleashing My Chakra,” and “Cat Contemplation.” Listening to the samples, I almost rolled up into a ball.
Another album, Music Cats Love: While You Are Gone by Bradley Joseph, kept with the theme of soft, nature sounds and new age instrumentals.
With a little common sense -- I highly doubt a cat will like heavy metal -- and observing what your cat bops her little head to, you’re sure to find music to suit both of you.
The benefits are great for you and your cat. As www.pets.ca’s Laura Platt states, the calming effect from music will “result in an overall less stressed cat, which is a happy cat.”
So, what music does your cat like?
