This month, the Washington Kastles are entering their second year as a competitor in World Team Tennis. The month-long league (whose team the Philadelphia Freedoms insipred a #1 hit in 1975 for Nationals Park-bound Elton John) takes advantage of space in the tournament schedule and features stars like Venus Williams, Anna Kournikova, and John McEnroe -- many of whom have never played in a local tournament. 2009 Wimbledon Ladies Champion Serena Williams is on the Kastles' roster and is scheduled for her turn in the 2-person rotation July 14th.
The arrival of the league spawned an interesting venue for home matches. Those matches are played at Kastles Stadium, recently upgraded to seat 3000 and located at the site of the old Washington Convention Center a block north of the Metro Center stop. The stadium will host the WTT championship finals July 26th. Individual tickets range from $45 to $65 on "marquee" nights during which a major tennis star will participate, and $25 to $45 on "non-marquee" nights. For those craving the VIP experience, four-seat boxes ranging from $1800 to $5000 are also available. Regardless of the price range one chooses, it's nice to add another Metro-friendly sports entertainment option to the area.
