The questions came, one after another, about the failings of the Eagles’ offense in Monday night’s 27-17 victory over the Redskins, until finally Andy Reid had had enough.
“I’m trying to feel like we just won a game,” he said in an even tone after the game, “but I appreciate you (media) guys asking (about the problems). Twenty-seven points, I don’t think that’s bad.”
So, he said, “I’m gonna enjoy this one.”
But not for long. He doesn’t have that luxury, with the Giants visiting Lincoln Financial Field this coming Sunday and the Cowboys following them into town a week later.
And as he certainly realizes, the Birds have some things to iron out. Donovan McNabb is again mired in one of those inexplicable funks of his. The whole Michael Vick experiment seems like a waste of time. And now Brian Westbrook is recovering from a concussion.
On Monday night the Eagles got two huge scoring plays from DeSean Jackson – a 67-yard run on a reverse and a 57-yard reception – but those plays accounted for nearly half of their 262 yards. They won largely because their defense (particularly new middle linebacker Will Witherspoon) came up big. Also because the Redskins are such a mess.
Still, Washington’s Jason Campbell threw for 284 yards, and his quarterback rating was on par with that of McNabb, who went 15-for-25 through the air, for a mere 156 yards. And lest we forget, he was only 22-for-46 in that ragged loss to Oakland a week earlier.
Vick? He had nine yards on one carry, a net of zero on his other two. He also completed his only pass for five yards.
As for Westbrook, he suffered his concussion when he hit his head on the knee of linebacker London Fletcher early in the game.
“I think he’ll be all right,” Reid said afterward.
Hard to say with concussions, though.
Just as it’s hard to say how quickly the Eagles' offense might recover.
