Don't want to be back in the employment line?

Depending on who you ask, freelancing during the recession can be a dream or a nightmare.

But, wherever you stand on the issue, here are some tips to help things go more smoothly.

-Get back in touch with previous clients. Don't try to sell to them, instead offer something. For example write them a friendly note with a link to an article you think they might enjoy. Connect them to someone with who you think they might want to network with. Offer them a free hour long consultation- just get yourself back on the radar without turning into a pushy salesperson.

-Add an additional service that is complimentary to your current services. For example, if you are an accountant don't start offering web design services; it just seems tacky. Offer a service that compliments what you currently do like weekly finance courses. This also gives you a reason to contact previous clients, as well as your current ones.

-Start working on retainer. Offer your clients a certain amount of time every month for a reduced rate.

-Don't stop marketing and networking. Go to mixers, put on your creative marketing hats- now is not the time to get too comfortable. Always be on the lookout for new opportunities.
