Keeping an up-to-date resume can be a chore, especially when you are self employed. But I've found that it's good to always have one on hand because you'll never know when you may need it.
A client may request one before they hire you, an organization may request your resume before they have you speak, or you may need to re-enter the traditional workforce- and it's pretty difficult to get anywhere without that handy piece of paper.
So what are some tips for writing a self employed resume?
-Focus on what you've accomplished, not your tasks. For instance, if you write reports don't just say that. Say what your reports have accomplished. I.E.- Created sales pieces which resulted in an increase of sales by 30%. How would you have those stats? Well, if it's your business, you should know something about what is going on.
-Some people say if you are looking for a salaried position, it's best to play down the fact that you were self employed. So instead of calling yourself the Owner of a consulting firm, you may want to list that title as Organizational Consultant. The reason is because there is this idea that self employed people don't know how to take orders from others.
-Avoid the Objective section and instead write a profile of yourself. What skills do you have? Why are you an asset?
-Remember that a self employed resume is really no different than any other resume.
