Google is now officially making the plunge.

Well, ladies and gentlemen, Google has decided to enter the world of operating systems and will begin to compete against the juggernauts.

In an official blog post last night, the company has announced that they will be opening their source code for their cloud computing based Chrome Operating System later this year.

By late 2010, netbooks with the OS will become available to consumers.

These are definitely exciting times.

Coming off the heels of their successful release of the Google Chrome browser, which they say is now used by 30 million people; the company now enters a field that has been completed dominated by Windows, OS X and arguably Linux for the last, well, for a long time.

The idea behind Chrome was great, a light, less intensive browser that was quick and focused on giving you a very speedy, personalized experience while browsing the web. If you haven’t used it yet, give it a shot because it is definitely on par with Firefox.

Google is taking a lot of these qualities and applying it to their Chrome OS. They note that the key aspects of the OS will be simplicity, speed and security and we all know how important those are. Like the browser, Chrome OS will have a minimal user interface so as not to get in your way and most of the functionality will take place on the web.

It will be light and it will be fast so its design will allow you to get it started up, and online in a matter of seconds.

Awesome.

As far as security, Google says that they are completely revamping the OS’ defense and that it will be completely free of malware, viruses and even security updates.

Again, awesome.

Web based applications will automatically work with Chrome OS and new apps not only will run on Chrome OS but will also work with Windows, OS X and Linux. Developers are going to be on this like white on rice.

Yeah, yeah, cliché but web based applications are the now and the future.

They also made it clear that this is a completely separate venture than their operating system, Android and while some things might overlap, Android has been specifically designed for netbooks, phones and set-top boxes while Chrome OS will eventually make it to PC’s.

Google is operating with the mindset that people are tired of waiting for their computers to boot up to get on the internet. Email, browsing, getting applications and so on have become such an integral part of our lives and they want Chrome OS to make those things faster, easier and safer.

Basically, they want to keep us online and happy and really, what’s wrong with that?

Now that its release has been confirmed, how big of a bite is Chrome OS going to take out of the market? Is it a viable competitor in a market that has had little competition?

The answer is a resounding yes.

Google has put out great products; it has a reputable name and lots of money. It will most definitely compete and it will be interesting to see the reaction from Microsoft, Apple and others.

So, let’s welcome Google to the big show and look for some more opinion on the announcement, here, later today.
