Until now this column has remained silent on the so-called "octomom," and her moral and legal plight.

For the purpose of my argument I make the following assumptions:

  1. The state of California, up to now, has taken no action against Ms. Suleman as a mother or provider of her 6 children who existed in obscurity prior to the birth of the octuplets;
  2. She has not been judged to be mentally incompetent by any doctor or court;
  3. She is generally a good person.

Look, parenthood is hard. For some people, having one baby is enough to drive them insane. Literally. Parenthood is an exhausting experience, and one that most would agree is about the best thing that a person can do with the life they have.

In the not too distant past, having 14 children would not have been that big of a deal. It is the fact that 8 came at once which seems to bother people. The gawkers voice welfare concerns, and that Nadya is singlehandedly bringing down the economy in California.  Hmmm, so that's what happened to the California economy, huh?

She is not the old lady who lived in a shoe. She does know what to do. She seems to be making a valiant attempt to capitalize on the attention and scorn. Good for her. If you watch the news, and if you read articles like this one, you are contributing to the stream of commerce that will (or at least should) make her less of a burden on the California economy than those complain about her.

I say congratulations Nadya. If this is what you wanted, then bless you, and best of luck to you.
