AppleInsider is saying that Apple will be shipping iMacs and Macbooks at more affordable prices. The Pro-line isn't budging, but the entry level Macs, which are the source of most purchases, will see the drops.
The article insists that this is not really a response to Microsoft's marketing campaign, but rather a nod to the recession and all the excitement about netbooks. AppleInsider reports that the Mac Tablet has taken much longer than expected to see the light of day, and as a result, Apple wants to combat potential sales lost to netbooks. While the article stresses that Mac sales only fell 3% compared to the 7.4% of PC's, Apple isn't taking any chances.
I've previously made much lengthy arguments regarding the price point for Apple products, but I think this fundamentally a good thing. It doesn't look like Apple will be sacrificing any sort of quality in the Macs as a result of dropping the price. If they drop the price to the correct amount and sell even more than they're already selling, it can only mean more profits for a company that's already doing great during this economic turn-down.
Expect a more lengthy review of the Macs at a cheaper price point, when they arrive.
