So you've lost your job or maybe your hours were cut back and you need some extra cash for the holidays. With a little creativity and imagination, you might be able to capitalize on the holiday dinners and parties being hosted by promoting yourself as the neighborhood caterer and party giver. Lots of people need help around the holidays, so If you are a good cook and love to put on dinners or parties for groups of people, large and small, let the word get around.

One of the rules for starting a business is to do what you do best. If cooking and entertaining is your "thing", then there is no reason why you can't make a little money from it and even turn it into a career. During the holidays is a perfect time. When I first opened my bed and breakfast, I would hire people around the holidays whenever we created parties or holiday events. They would  help me with the cooking, baking, and serving and decorating.

During the Christmas holidays, a lot of these helpers were happy to to put up decorations and trim the tree and even help decorate the whole house and the dinner table. This type of service can easily be turned into a business. You just need to get the word around. First start in your neighborhood and let all your friends know that you are available to shop, cater, and help design and execute parties, events, and  holiday decor or whatever else is needed. If this starts to work out, creating a website or blog where you can list your services would be the next step. Blogs are easy to create at Blogspot or Wordpress.

Once you have identified your services, put up a website, and have a few events under your belt, you can send emails out to friends, relatives, and neighbors referring them to your blog and your services. From there, word of mouth and social networks, can be an effective way to build relationships and get referrals.

You might then have business cards made and/or postcards or flyers listing your services with your phone number, web address, and email address. They can be distributed to businesses in your neighborhood and beyond. And, of course, given to friends and clients to give to their friends. Take them to your beauty salon and pass them out to customers. Be creative. It can be fun and maybe turn into something lucrative.
