Valentine’s Day is almost here, and in today’s economy many are seeking alternative ways of celebrating frugally. Whether you are alone, with family, or that very special someone, there are ways to have fun without breaking the bank.

If you are single, don’t get bogged down with depressing thoughts of being alone. Take time to appreciate yourself! Treat yourself with a luxurious bubble bath, get your hair styled or browse your favorite store for a special item. Perhaps there is a movie you’ve been wanting to see but never take the time to watch. Take this day to rent the flick, cozy up with a favorite snack and drink, and devote a couple of hours to be entertained. Whatever you choose to do, make the experience extraordinary. Don a favorite outfit, smile and show off your best side.

Families may want to spread love to the kids. Declare “pink and red” day and make sure everyone finds something with those colors to wear. Bake a cake together. To make a heart cake, create enough batter for a two-layer cake. Pour half the batter into an 8- or 9-inch square pan and pour the other half into an 8- or 9-inch round pan. After baking, set the square piece on a large firm surface. (A large cutting board covered with foil works nicely). Cut the round layer in half, diagonally. Match up the edges as shown in the photo. Choose your favorite frosting or use a little red food coloring with white frosting to make it pink or red. Try some of the crafts and games at DTKH Holidays website   or Nickelodeon’s Nick Jr. site.

For a couple looking for romantic fun without spending a fortune, do something special together to celebrate. Take time to give each other special attention whether it’s a bubble bath together or a nice long massage. Treat the woman in your life to breakfast in bed or make a great dinner together, complete with candles and rose petals on the table. A picnic in the middle of the living room floor can be adventurous or cuddling up together on the sofa to watch a great movie is fun. If you want to get out of the house, take in a matinee to save money. If the weather permits, bag up lunch and head out to the local park for fresh air and to shake off the mid-winter blahs.

Getting out of a routine and recognizing that the time set aside is special can create a festive atmosphere regardless of what you choose to do. Spread the love and spread the fun!
