Traveling with kids is a challenge regardless of their ages. On car trips, frequent stops are a must, and if they aren't sleeping, they want to fight or be entertained. DVD players are more common in cars today and they didn't exist when my children were small. For those getting ready for holiday travel, consider a few of these ideas to make the trip smoother.
Disney Family has a great printable check list - You might not want everything on the list, but there are some great ideas here.
CDs - Create or buy CDs with songs for the kids. Make sure these are different than the ones they listen to at home so they don't get bored quickly.
Sing - Now is a great chance to teach a captivated audience all the songs you learned as a child! Keep it fun and silly.
BusSongs has a huge library of great songs and nursery rhymes. Search by title, popularity or theme such as musical rounds, TV songs, holiday tunes and more.
Play games - A scavenger hunt is always fun and keeps the kids engage. Create a list of things to look for such as a dog riding in a car, someone wearing a red coat, a pink car, out-of-state license plates, cows, horses, and a mile marker with the number "4" in it. If you are familiar with your route, add some things to customize the list such as an odd house, amusement park sign or water tower in the shape of a peach
Trivia questions are also fun and educational. A general online search for children's trivia will create a variety of results but one particular site offers printable trivia in a variety of topics for kids such as "Storybook Animals."
Award prizes - Pick up several dollar items, wrap them up and award prizes for game participation and good behavior. I don't recommend awarding "winners" because it pits the kids against each other and could cause fighting!
Share personal stories - Ask your children about their favorite part of the holiday and why; who has been their favorite teacher and why; what kind of animal would they like to be and why. Don't forget to share your own thoughts!
Print out maps for the kids - They can follow along and learn map reading skills at the same time. Google Maps has additional links and information just for the holidays.
Whatever activity you choose or mode of travel you use, remember that kids get cranky and tired, too. Keep things in perspective and have a safe, happy holiday!
