Seeing Christmas decorations before Halloween seemed a bit hasty but two weeks later I realize the holidays are here. Now is the time to plan for Thanksgiving and subsequent religious celebrations.
This time of year is hectic and can be stressful. Consider these tips for a smoother more enjoyable season.
Plan ahead
- Pull out a calendar or print a page from the computer and write down everything that affects your family including holidays, time off from work, school closings, recitals, practices, doctor appointments, church events, parties. Schedule decorating time, too!
- Make a list of the things you would like to do. Perhaps you always wanted to see a local light display, see The Nutcracker, bake cookies, host a party, see a holiday exhibit at the art gallery.
- Compare your "want" list with your calendar. Be realistic and write in the things you know you can do. Don't plan to host a party if there's no time to prepare!
Keep your exercise routine
- Exercise is a great stress reliever
- Energy increases with exercise
- It's a great way to spend time clearing your head and reorganizing thoughts
- If you aren't exercising regularly, start taking short walks a few times a week and build up gradually.
Eat healthy
- Drink plenty of water
- Avoid junk foods and fast food as much as possible
- Holiday treats are wonderful but eat them in moderation
- Alcohol zaps your system and causes dehydration - drink responsibly and in moderation
Rest
- If you are tired, rest! Take a break, take a nap, take time off.
- Go to bed on time
Breathe
- Sit up straight, lift your chin, Inhale through the nose, exhale slowly through the mouth
- Taken inventory of your system. Are you hungry or thirsty? How is your back? Are your shoulders tight? Is your neck stiff? Is your face tight or relaxed? Stand up, stretch, rotate, bend and breathe.
- Do this at least three times a day (morning, lunch and late afternoon).
Enjoy yourself
- The holiday season should be fun and exciting for everyone - including you! Everything does not have to be perfect. By planning ahead and making time for yourself, you will be more relaxed and less prone to stress.
