Family outings are a great way to connect and do things as a unit. I recently invited my parents, my adult children and granddaughter to go with me and explore the “Pumpkin Festival” in Pittsboro, NC. None of us had ever been but we explored, enjoyed music, food, chatted with vendors and shared time together – something we haven’t done in a long time. Not only did we have the adventure of going to an unknown event, we reconnected in a time when we are all busy individuals.
I suppose the trek took me back to times in my childhood when we’d pack up a picnic lunch and head out on a day trip. Mom, Dad or my grandparents would hear about some place and off we’d go. I never tired of seeing new places and going to out-of-the way locations.
Last week I met John Delconte, founder and president of smallwanderer.com His effort in gathering a database of information extends into four states providing a unique and searchable website for those seeking the small town experience. The traveler can look at events, festivals, shops and points of interest. John’s focus is very specific, looking only at towns with populations under 10,000; walkable, historic, artistic and natural offerings; and has locally owned shops.
The site is timely as people seek information about destinations close to home due to gas and budget restraints. I also believe there is a surge in the desire to spend more time with family combining an action or activity (such as walking) with sites of interest. More great things will come from John’s venture as the site grows. Take a peek at
