Other displaced Midwesterners will relate when I associate the onset of fall with small-town fairs, pony rides, and barn gatherings, so it should come as no surprise that my weekend recommendation hearkens back to these elements of home. Those eager for a day-cation from the seasonless city center should drive no further than Agoura Hills, where the fifth annual Reyes Adobe Days promises food, entertainment, art, and even a quaint, Saturday morning parade. Festivities start Friday night, when the original Reyes Adobe barn will host wine tasting, hors d'oeuvres, and a meet-and-greet with the twelve local artists who contributed work (6:30-9:00pm, $10 suggested donation.) In quaint, rural-American form, Saturday morning's 10am parade will include floats, bands, classic cars, and clowns. Spend the afternoon on Saturday or Sunday enjoying local food selections, art exhibits, a petting zoo, and live music at Reyes Adobe Park (10am-4pm.) It's enough to bring tears to the eyes of anyone raised on late-September doughnuts and cider, and a handy history lesson for everyone else: Reyes Adobe is Agoura Hill's first home, built in 1850 as a ranch homestead and preserved along El Camino Real ever since. Check the Agoura Hills community page for details.
