It's the L.A. people warned you about when you moved here: seamy, lurid, and full of, um... adults dressed up like little babies. You may have missed it in Frommer's, but Los Angeles is home to "the only fetish art gallery in America," a curio shop of cultural oddities called the Antebellum in Hollywood. Saturday night marks the close of a month-long exhibit on three specific fetishes: clowns, babies, and amputees (what the common bond here is, you'll have to investigate for yourself.) Those unafraid to walk on the wild side will catch an eyeful from contributing artists Rob Clarke, Jerry Portelli, and Binky the Clown, among others.
On hand for the closing night festivities are Elayne and Buck Angel, one the author of "The Piercing Bible" and the other a transsexual male porn star. Once the president of the only licensed body art shop in New Orleans' French Quarter, Elayne now lives in Mexico and boasts a collection of winged, scaled body art that has to be seen to be believed. She estimates that she's performed 40,000 piercings in her 30-year career and will be signing copies of her book, a consumer's guide to the piercing arts. Antebellum owner Rick Castro will have a juggler and DJ on hand, and a cash bar open as well. If you're feeling adventurous this Saturday from 7pm-9pm, the Antebellum is located at 1643 N Las Palmas Avenue in Hollywood. Fair warning from Mr. Castro himself (or is it an enticement?): Certain individuals do tend to show up in costume.
