Give USA Network some props. They don't do a lot of original, scripted shows (only 7, if you don't count wrestling), but what they do, they do right.
Their latest, White Collar, airs Friday nights at 10/9C and stars Matt Bomer as Neal Caffrey, a convicted white collar criminal (hence the title. Clever, no?), who we meet as he's attempting to break out of a maximum security prison.
Matt Bomer (last seen as Bryce in NBC's Chuck-- which you should also be watching) plays Caffrey as a smooth-talking, smarter-than-he-looks, charming fella (easily reminiscent of Michael Westen from USA's Burn Notice-- which you should also also be watching).
The plot in a nutshell? Caffrey's the best at what he does (although not the best at avoiding arrest), and in return for not getting sent back to jail, he offers to help his old nemesis, Peter Burke (played by Carnivale's Tim DeKay-- though he was also 'Bizarro Jerry' from Seinfeld). Together the two of them spend their days and nights tracking down white collar criminals. Burke carries a gun and a badge. Caffrey has a lovely ankle bracelet. That he can never take off. And is connected via satellite to the FBI.
The two gents play off each other exceedingly well, and the result is the perfect blend of comedy and action (with a pinch of drama tossed in for flavor) that makes White Collar easiest one of the most fun new shows this fall.
Seriously, give it a shot. (You can view it online or set your TIVO-- the pilot is replayed 4 more times before Friday's 2nd ep).
It's a breezy, entertaining, more-than-welcome change of pace from the procedurals and dramas that dominate primetime TV... and it's hella better than Leno..jpg)
