Sometimes ideas look good on paper.
Sometimes not.
ABC has announced that it is taking to the skies to promote its upcoming sci-fi drama V, using skywriting. Of a big V. In the sky.
Really? Skywriting?
Sure, it was particularly effective in The Wizard of Oz with the whole 'Surrender Dorothy' bit, and the jam band Phish turned at least a few heads with their pretty unique take on skywriting (seriously. watch it.) to promote this year's summer tour...
...but just a big V?
It's true, though. This Friday if you happen to be near a major US landmark, look to the skies, you may just see a V (or a ^ or a < or a >, depending on where you're standing).
Whether or not it draws in more viewers remains to be seen, since presumably the pilots aren't planning on also skywriting 'Tuesday November 3rd on ABC at 8/7C'.
No word yet on which landmarks have been selected to receive the giant smoky V treatment, though one would think Washington D.C. and New York City would still be semi-off limits, especially with the whole Air Force One photo-op debacle from back in April.
Or course ABC could also just cancel the whole thing and launch a nice viral campaign like District 9's successful posters.
Or maybe just keep airing ads during Dancing with the Stars and Grey's Anatomy.
Don't you think that the people who are interested in watching V already know it's coming (and probably -bonus- know when it airs)? And does anyone seriously believe that the people that aren't aware of V are going to start watching just because there's a giant, cryptic V (or ^ or < or >) in the sky?.jpg)
