Workplace Health: World’s AIDS Day
Millions of employed individuals are HIV positive and yet most of them keep it to themselves: stigma still exists. I still remember back in the early nineties, the mother of one of my daughter’s friends approached me. A friend of her daughter’s was HIV positive. The three girls were playing at my home. The little one had already lost one of her parents and the other was dying of AIDS. This mother was worried about her daughter contracting HIV. Her daughter and her friend often played together, staying overnight and sometimes taking turns to shower. Her question was: could her daughter become HIV positive?
More people are living and working with HIV than ever before. Even when co-workers wouldn’t share a toothbrush or a razor, the fear of becoming infected from talking and interacting with someone with HIV is still prevalent in spite of extensive awareness campaigns.
