When movie star Michelle Monaghan showed up in Vail, Colo., in April, her new movie "Trucker" had not been picked up for widespread distribution in theaters.
Now it has. The move about a mom who hasn't seen her son in years before he shows up on her doorstep, is slated to premier nationwide on Sept. 18.
Vail Film Festival watchers got to see it first, however, on Thursday April 2 at the Cascade Theater. The screening was followed by an opening night gala presented by Stella Artois at Donovan Pavilion. Monaghan, also star of the recent popular flicks "Gone Baby Gone,” and “Made of Honor,” showed up in a colorful, striped sweater for the event, accompanied by her husband Pete White.
American Pie actor Jason Biggs kept a low profile, but was believed to have shredded the slopes that weekend, according to Sam Chafos, film festival spokesman. Biggs planned to attend with wife Jenny Mollen. The two met while filming “My Best Friend’s Girl”.
The festival “lived large” in many ways but was intimate in many others. After all, very few venues allow fans to get up-close-and-personal with the stars.
“We make an effort to make it more friendly and on a conversational scale, rather than a loud rocking party, comparatively,” Chafos said. “ (Filmmakers) like that it’s so casual and low-key.”
Star power
Star watchers also got to see Kevin Smith, director of cult favorite “Clerks”. Smith received the event’s “renegade award”.
Tricia O’Kelley promoted her new flick “Weather Girl”, a movie about a Seattle weather person who freaks out on-air over her cheating boyfriend, the morning show anchor.
Ashley Jensen, the “Ugly Betty” star, was on hand, as was Kaitlin Olson.
Also at the festival was Giancarlo Esposito, best-known for his role as Agent Mike Giardello on the TV crime drama “Homicide: Life on the Street”.
Monaghan received an “excellence in acting” award from the festival.
