Saturday afternoon at Lighthouse Point in Santa Cruz it all came together. Gigantic waves, beautiful weather, large crowd of spectators, and a hardy crew of pro surfers competing for it all. If you weren't there, you missed something special.

Twenty-five feet

The legendary waves were actually bigger than the Lane could handle. Impossibly tall peaks appeared now and then on the horizon, easily 25 feet tall. And then some of them feathered and crested in the far distance, threatening to break where no one was going to surf.

Middle Peak

Most of the competitors played it safe, avoiding Middle Peak altogether, and opting instead for the Point or the Indicator. But the ocean was the real star of the show. As accomplished as the wave riders are, the waves easily outshone them. Time and again the crowd oohed and ahhed at the gargantuan empty waves.

Sunday

It was quite a spectacle. And Sunday the whole even wraps it in a bow. You have some time to get to the Lighthouse and enjoy it yourself. It's time well spent.

You can follow the action in a few ways:

1. Go there and watch, always the best option.

2. Live cam view of Steamer Lane, courtesy of the Santa Cruz Wharf.

3. Surfline's HD camera of Steamer Lane, membership required.

4. Results posted on O'Neil's Cold Water Classic site.

5. Webcast on O'Neil's site.
