Major swell of legendary proportions arrived as forecast for the Cold Water Classic. The crowds came, the crowds cheered, the ocean came alive like seldom seen. The surfers were up to it, even though they appeared just a bit intimidated. By late afternoon the heats moved inside to the Indicator, eschewing the mondo peaks on Middle and even Third reefs.

Spectating
Watching from the cliffs along West Cliff Drive and Lighthouse Point was a highlight. The day was warm, sunny, and clear. You could see for miles to the horizon where ever larger peaks appeared at regular intervals. You could also see right over the surfers' shoulders as they braved the conditions for the competition.
