Conditions at the Lane Wednesday weren't conducive to the surfing. So the focus shifted to a beach break out of town for the Junior competition. It was a challenge, but the contest completed the first two rounds, and Nat Young made the cut. The winner of last year's Cold Water Classic found a way to first place in his heat.

Thursday difficulties

Thursday presents a challenge with small conditions at the Lane; we are officially between swells. Action is likely to continue at the beach break, or possibly later in the afternoon back at the Lighthouse. It's going to be problematic to get the heats in the book.

Friday looks good

Friday is a whole different equation. There is an early northwest swell forecast, which should increase during the day. There is another major NW swell scheduled to hit the shores late Friday and pump through the weekend.

Major swell

The new swell will peak at dawn on Saturday, at more than 25 feet, 18 seconds, from 300 degrees. It will hold throughout the weekend, making for substantial or even epic conditions for the contest. You should plan to see the action first hand both Saturday and Sunday.

You can follow the action in a few ways:

1. Go there and watch, always the best option.

2. Live cam view of Steamer Lane, courtesy of the Santa Cruz Wharf.

3. Surfline's HD camera of Steamer Lane, membership required.

4. Results posted on O'Neil's Cold Water Classic site.

5. Webcast on O'Neil's site.
