Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women, although many more women die from heart disease than breast cancer. Family history, diet, age, having children and ethnicity may each play a role in causing breast cancer, although sometimes the cause is unknown. Regular breast cancer screenings, such as a mammogram, are the best way to detect breast cancer early.
A mammogram is an x-ray of the breast, and detects abnormalities in breast tissue. The Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that beginning at the age of 40, mammograms should be performed annually.
Connecticut law requires that group health insurance policies issued, renewed, amended or continued in this state on or after October 1, 2001 provide coverage for annual mammograms for any woman who is 40 or older, or a baseline mammogram for any woman who is between the ages of 35 and 39. †
Uninsured woman in Connecticut may also receive annual mammograms free of charge, if certain criteria are met. Any woman at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty level, between the ages of 40 and 64, and without health insurance, or health insurance that excludes routine mammograms, or an insurance deductible greater than $1000, is eligible to receive free annual breast exams.
