Fangtasia poster.

Like the name implies, Fangtasia is a club where humans can go to mingle with vampires. These humans are commonly referred to as “fang-bangers” because not only do they let vampires bite them, but they also tend to share more intimate experiences together as well.

Fangtasia is an obvious pun on the word “Fantasia”, which is no doubt cheesy in this day and age. However, the vampire Bill Compton explains, “You have to remember that most vampires are very old. Puns used to be the highest form of humor.”
Fangtasia, located in Shreveport, Louisiana, has a full bar for humans and Tru Blood for vampires in four blood types: O Negative, A Negative, B Negative, and AB Positive. All Tru Bloods are served at a precise 98.6 degrees. Fangtasia often offers drink specials such as humans drink free until 1am. The cover is $20, and the club opens at 10pm to ensure that the sun has gone down.
Fangtasia, which is housed in a converted warehouse, might not look like much on the outside. Other than vampire co-owner Pam’s standing at the door and checking human IDs, looking simultaneously fantastic and scary while doing it, it pretty much looks like any other Louisiana dive bar.
Once inside, you’d think that it would be extremely dark and moody, but it is surprisingly well lit with dozens of strings of red Christmas lights, candles, and blood red wall lighting on the heavy red curtains. To the left of the bar is a picture of George Bush about to drink from the neck of the Statue of Liberty. Near the entrance is a merchandise table where you’ll often see tourists buying Fangtasia t-shirts.
Sookie Stackhouse, a resident of the nearby Bon Temps describes the club:  “[It] feels a little bit like what a vampire bar would look like if it were a ride at Disney World.”
The music is hard rock, electronic, and modern covers of classic rock songs. Vampire go-go dancers perform on podiums. But it is the owner and proprietor, Eric Northman, who seems to be the main focus of the room. At about 1000 years old, he is the oldest thing in the room. He has a strong presence to him, and you’ll often find humans throwing themselves at his feet. It also doesn’t hurt that he sits on what could only be described as a throne at the center of the club.
Eric, who was a Viking before he was turned, has about a thousand years of experience as an entrepreneur and leader. Each night Fangtasia is flooded with newcomers from around the area who have come to meet vampires, as well as the regulars. Pam, along with her maker Eric, is very business savvy and up-to-date on the latest marketing trends. Pam has been known to log on to message boards and online forums to promote the club, while Eric keeps up with current events, often throwing events on the same nights as important dates to the Fellowship of the Sun, a religious movement against vampires. This is Eric’s way of mocking that group, as well as making some money out of the situation. Fangtasia will no doubt remain a popular night spot under this management team. In fact, Fangtasia is doing so well that local goth bars are starting to see a drop in business.
While there definitely seems to be some overlapping of the goth and vampire/fangophile cultures, some aspects of the two scenes are fundamentally different. Because although you will see many of its patrons wearing dog collars and other bondage gear, Fangtasia has a strict rule of no biting on the premises. So perhaps Fangtasia isn’t as fun as some of the club events we have here in Atlanta!
Season 2 of True Blood premieres at 9pm this Sunday, June 14 on HBO.
