The summer suit has had many incarnations and permutations over the decades; a seersucker number for a day at the races with your favorite lady or perhaps a white linen kit for that 4th of July pool side margarita soiree? But for those truly adventurous dandies who still favor looking remarkable in the mid day summer heat, there are imaginative alternatives.
More and more commonplace in progressive European cities over the past few years, a trend has been brewing that would make Angus Young smile broadly. Throwing on a form fitting pair of flat front shorts (cuffs preferred)-think 18 inches long as an ideal length- under your favorite suit jacket or vest. Not only is this look comfortable, edgy and more than a bit daring, it is also guaranteed to propel you to the forefront of the most stylistic fashionistas. Andre Rabideau, cultural and fashion icon sums of the advantages of the combo, "it's a classic schoolyard look modernized into the perfect spring summer ensemble; or a look befitting any outdoor event, or to simply spice up a backyard gathering."
Once reserved for UPS or an AC/DC show, the shorts/jacket combination/revelation has been popping up stateside of late in such places as NYC and even yes, even here in Seattle. As Brian Madson, local man about town succinctly puts it “sometimes it's good to set yourself apart from the rest of the guys with a distinctive style. Shorts suits do that, and they keep you cool in the warmer months.” Versace showcased one such look for their 2009 summer line (pictured) and judging from the few combos rocked at an especially raucous Easter bash (including yours truly), this once taboo faux pas may just make summer fashion a touch more exciting.
