Too busy working to work out? Think again!

Finding time to exercise can be very frustrating especially if you are a busy career woman.  Too often it's all work and no workout!  There is always something more important to do. But if you break your workouts into mini workouts you can keep your metabolism burning and you won't even notice the time you spent getting into shape!

While you are at work you can burn extra calories simply by taking the stairs instead of the elevator.  And when you go on break take a quick walk even if it's just up and down the hallway!  Every little bit of movement you can squeeze into your work day will help.

When you are home you can also work out without much effort.  If you have a treadmill, remove all the clothing that has gathered on it, dust it off, and put it somewhere that you pass by often. My treadmill is in my dining area where the dining room table should be. I have to walk by it every time I go to the kitchen and every time I go to the bathroom. But instead of passing it by, I jump on it for just one to two minutes at a time. In two minutes I can walk one tenth of a mile (and I go slow). If I do that 10 times a day I have walked a mile and I barely noticed it!

If you watch TV you can exercise during the commercials. Now surely you must watch at least one TV show or movie per night. I timed the commercials during one of my favorite shows and there was just over 37 minutes of commercial time during a two hour program. Look at all the mini workouts you can do just while watching TV! So during each break plan on doing something, anything! Here are some mini workout ideas you can do during commercial breaks:

  • Walk in place or walk on the treadmill
  • Stand at the counter and do leg exercises
  • Do arm exercises with small weights
  • Jog in place
  • Do some floor exercises
  • Walk up and down some stairs
  • Run around the house
  • Do some push ups
  • Do some jumping jacks
  • Dance

Get the idea? You can do many forms of exercise during your favorite TV show. It may not sound like much but if you are out of shape, trust me, jogging in place throughout an entire commercial break will have you huffing and puffing. Then you can sit and relax and watch TV until the next commercial!

Another way to sneak in a mini workout is while doing your regular housework. Instead of just standing at the sink to do dishes try doing some leg lifts at the same time. When you are folding laundry put the laundry basket on the floor and bend to pick up one article of clothing at a time. Fold it while holding your arms straight out. Stuck at a stop light? Tighten your muscles for a bit and hold. Then relax. Taking in the groceries? Take in one bag at a time and put those items away. Then go out and get another bag. The more trips you make out to the car the more walking you do! And never, ever park near the entrance of a store. Always park at the end of the lot and walk! Not only will you get more exercise but parking where no one else parks will get you less door dings!

The bottom line is to just get moving! It's free and it's easy! And in the end it pays off, especially if you are someone like me who is just starting out. Knowing you can accomplish a mini workout not only boosts your metabolism but also boosts your self esteem. It might just be the encouragement you need!
