The morning sun slowly creeps up across the Eastern horizon shedding light through the tree tops. The days are longer now. The cool air of the night mixes with the sun warmed breeze gently blowing puffs of cool and warm delight. It is a time to enjoy Mother Nature at her best. A new day begins and the outside sounds of business that often goes unnoticed prevail. The sounds range from traffic in the distance to neighbors hurrying off to work. There is a collection, a murmur of sound that paint the background noise with color. It is a magical sound if care is taken to listen closely. Yard birds make their music. It is the sound of summer.

All day long the traveling musical minstrel continues. It is a wonder to the ears. Sometimes a sighting of the musicians lends itself to the magic. The range of notes is expansive, there is even a drummer in the background on occasion as the woodpecker pounds a beat in search of insects. Rat a tat tat, rat a tat tat, he drums. The delight of yard birds reminds us that there is much more to life than our own personal situation. It broadens the spectrum of existence and leaves a glow of warmth deep within the soul. This is good for human health, to listen and tune in to the nature station.

It is possible to attract these feathered musicians to make their merry music closer to any back yard. Certain encouragement will call them in. A source for water providing a place for them to wet their whistles is one attraction. A bird bath not only looks pretty in the garden it actually provides a much needed element to urban yard birds who often have to hunt to find a place to drink and take a refreshing dip.

Planting shrubs and trees that bear fruits and berries will also attract more musicians from the traveling minstrel. The yard birds have to eat and there is nothing more attractive than a bounty of fresh fruits and nuts for the feathered friends. Bird feeders are also sure to bring the musicians on. The birds of today's society have adapted quite well to the habits of their human brothers.

Providing natural habitats and creating a homey atmosphere attracts a variety of birds. Children love to get involved when it comes to nature projects. It helps shape the adults of the future to guide them along  a greener path. Take care to treat these musical marvels with kind consideration and they are sure to continue creating the beautiful sound of summer.

Birds are so common that often they go unnoticed. Taking time out to stop and listen to the songs they sing is a joyful and healthy part of outdoor life.
