MSNBC.com ran this story of Mollie, a German Shorthaired Pointer, who fell into a well on her family’s property in Olar, S.C. Mollie spent the night 33 feet below the surface and was rescued by firefighter Dwight Williams. Mollie’s owner, James Hartzog, was reportedly “stunned that Mollie came out without so much as a limp”. He is now considering transitioning Mollie from a yard dog into a house dog to reduce likelihood of similar trauma.
Mollie is a lucky dog to have been rescued in such a prompt manner and to have emerged from the incident apparently showing only minor injuries. It is unknown if Mr. Hartzog took Mollie to her veterinarian for an examination after her ordeal. It is important to your pet’s health that a veterinarian performs a physical exam on your pet after suffering similar trauma (falls, hit by car, animal fights, etc). Life threatening internal abnormalities may not be apparent from a pet’s external appearance after a potentially injurious episode.
If your property contains any holes deep enough to trap your pet or child, please take measures to prevent family members from entering such hazards.
Mollie’s safe return to her family after her precarious experience is an amazing story. Both Mollie and her family are extremely fortunate!
