Vote YES on Prop 2--Improve the Health of Animals and People!

As an animal lover and health care advocate, I hope you will see the importance of voting YES on Proposition 2 on the November 04, 2008 ballot in California.

Prop 2, known as the Prevention of Farm Animal Cruelty Act, aims to prevent the inhumane treatment of agricultural animals by improving their housing standards. Many of these animals are confined to spaces that do not permit full range of motion of limbs, nor natural anatomic positioning of their head and neck. Additionally, animals are overcrowded in these small spaces, creating unnecessary stress on the immune system, increased incidence of self-mutilation, and higher potential for cannibalistic behavior. When the immune system is stressed, the ability to fight off infectious disease is lowered, potentially leading factory farms to increased use of antibiotic and anti-parasitic medications. Multiple studies confirm an increased risk of Salmonella-infected eggs produced in farms that confine hens to cages as compared to those that operate with a cage-free format. Salmonella bacteria food borne-infections have been reported to cause illness in up to 110,000 Americans per year.

Prop 2 allows farms that currently employ inhumane practices until 2015 to transition to more humane animal husbandry modalities. With your vote YES on Prop 2, California will join several other US states and European Union countries that have already passed similar legislation.

Prop 2 has the backing of many animal welfare organizations, including the Humane Society of the United States, the Center for Food Safety, and the California Veterinary Medical Association.
