So. You’ve done all the right things before you adopted your newest family member. Read up on the temperaments and traits of all the breeds you were interested in to make sure they will be a good family fit. Or, maybe you said, “let the fates decide” and took in a stray or rescued dog (good for you). But now you’re paying for it with an overly aggressive dog, or one who chews everything in sight Oh. Did you just hear your wife say, “Honey, why is the backyard have all those holes? ”

Well, don’t despair. There is great help right here in San Jose and my first pet services review for this Dlog-Blog.

Introducing, Stacy’s Wag’N’Train

The main reason for the review is Stacy herself.

Stacy  is a strong believer in the importance of education as a dog behavior professional.  She has a Master’s degree in an area of psychology called “Human and Animal Cognition” (Wow. I didn’t know there was such a thing, did you?) and is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer, an honor only given to trainers who have met a minimum number of classroom teaching hours and have passed a comprehensive test of their dog behavior knowledge.

So, Stacy, what kindda things do you usually deal with?

“My most common issues are door-manners and on-leash dog-dog aggression, what we usually describe as ‘leash reactivity” Stacy says.  “Door manners include teaching the dog not to dash out the door, jump on the door, or jump on the guests coming through the door.  With leash-reactivity, we concentrate on teaching the dog to ignore other dogs that you see when on a walk.  So many dogs over react to the sight of another dog, and it can take a lot of patience and skill to overcome this.”

Gotcha, thanx. Now onto the service itself.

Stacy’s Wag’N’Train has been offering dog training services in the San Jose area since 1996, and now has three main forms of services:
o    Dog training classes
o    Private Lessons, and a new service called:
o    Expert Personal Trainer.

You’re familiar with dog training group classes, right?  – you know, where a group of owners meet once a week with the instructor to learn how to work their dogs through basic commands such as “sit”, “come”, “leave it”, while they teach their dogs to walk on a loose leash and pay attention to their owners and ignore the other dogs in class.  In Stacy’s case, the classes are held inside various pet stores, and are limited to no more than 6 dogs, so each dog-owner “team” gets plenty of personal attention from Stacy and her assistants.

Private Lessons often cover the same sorts of commands and training, but are taught in a one-on-one situation, usually in the dog-owner’s home (or local park).   In addition, Stacy will address problem behavior issues if needed.

Stacy’s newest service is the Expert Personal Trainer program.  Also called “day training”, it is similar to a board-and-train service – but while still staying in your home. Stacy visits 3-4 times a week for an hour to work on issues like basic obedience, walking calmly on a leash, coming when called, and having manners around food and not knocking Aunt Flo off her feet every time she comes in the front door.
And that does it, right? All trained? Hmmm, not quite. There’s a little matter of the human factor still remaining.

Huh? The Human factor?
Yeap! At the end of each training week, Stacy meets with the owners to demonstrate what the dog has learned and to “transfer” the dog’s new skills to the owners. You need to know what your pal knows, right?

There. All done!

So, anything else you need to know?

Well, just that Stacy is smart, educated and experienced, Oh, and there’s the fact she really, really cares about the dogs and is just plain nice to boot! So, if you need her services – she’s ready to help.
