A man and his dog were walking along a road enjoying each others company, when it suddenly occurred to the man that his dog had been dead for years. Then it hit him that he was dead. too. He remembered dying. He looked down the long road, wondering where it was leading them.
After a while, they came to a high, white stone wall along one side of the road. It looked like fine marble. At the top of a long hill, a tall arch glowed in the sunlight., with a magnificent gate that looked like mother of pearl, and the street that led to the gate looked like pure gold. He and the dog walked toward the gate, and as he got closer, he saw a man at a desk to one side.

He called out, "Excuse me, where are we?"
"This is Heaven, sir", the man answered.
"Wow!" He knelt down to pet his dog. "Hey, we made it boy!"  The dog licked his face. His tongue felt a little dry. "Would you happen to have some water?" he asked the man at the gate.
"Of course, sir. Come right in, and I'll have some ice water brought right up. He gestured, and the gate began to open.
As the man approached, the gate keeper held up his hand.. "I'm sorry, sir, but we don't accept pets."
The man thought a moment. "Well, I can't just abandon my friend." He sighed and  then turned back toward the road and continued the way he had been going.
After another long walk, and at the top of another long hill, he came to a dirt road which led through a an open farm gate. There was no fence, yet he couldn't see beyond where it should be.  As he approached the gate, he saw an old man inside, leaning against a tree and reading a book.
"Excuse me, sir!", he called to the reader. "Do you have any water?"
"Yeah, sure, there's a pump over there." The old man lowered his manuscript and pointed. "Come on in."
"How about my friend here?" The man rubbed his dog's head.
"There should be a bowl by the pump."
They went through the gate, and sure enough, there was an old fashioned hand pump with a bowl beside it. The man filled the bowl and gave it to the dog. While the dog lapped up the fresh water, the man pumped some water into his palm for himself and drank.
When they were sated, he and the dog walked back toward the man by the tree."That was mighty refreshing water, thank you, " "Yup. It's the best." said the old man, while scribbling something in his book, then closed it.
"What do you call this place?" The man asked, glancing around at the lush, green pastures.
"Why, this is Heaven", the old man replied.
"Well, that's confusing", the man said ."The man down the road said hos place was Heaven, too."
"Oh, you mean the place with the gold street and pearly gates? Nope. That's Hell."
"Doesn't it make you mad for them to use your name like that?"
"Oh, No.  We're fine with that. They do such  a wonderful job screening out the folks who'd leave their best friends behind."
