With Bing on board, it’s warfare again in the search engine arena. I guess Larry Page and Sergey Brin now know what David Filo and Jerry Yang felt like when Google trounced Yahoo in the cyberspace race. Microsoft is calling its new baby a “decision engine.” Hmm, makes me wonder who decides? I can see some advantages to letting an algorithm control my searches but, with Microsoft’s record of ‘dumbing-down’ its products, do we really need another computer program controlling our knowledge (or access to it)? That’s a little too much like censorship.
But, according to a New York Post journalist, James Doran, (http://www.nypost.com/seven/06142009/business/fear_grips_google_174235.htm) Google founders are more than a bit “rattled” with the King’s Bing, but other sources—InfoWorld journalist, Robert X. Cringely—say rattled is overkill (http://www.infoworld.com/d/adventures-in-it/google-vs-bing-fear-stops-here-553), especially when, so far, Bing has only managed to hang onto second place for a single day (http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/06/07/quick-peak-bings-reign-as-2-search-engine-lasted-one-day). In other words, Yahoo is still holding strong to second place and Google is still winning the race, hands down.
Google has been a household word for so long, we now say “Google solar energy” to find info about solar panels, or “Google Stargate” to find out about the new SciFi Stargate Universe series, or “Google me,” to see my portfolio online. “Bing me,” just doesn’t quite sound the same—Bing Stargate, Bing solar panels, Bing, Bing, Bing—sounds like a pinball machine. However, to be fair, the next two articles feature the pros and cons of both programs.

Since everyone’s search requests are different, only you can decide which program best fits your needs. I use Google now, but I still use Yahoo on occasion. So maybe some Net Surfers will use all three.
