There's that bit of scientific wisdom that says a body in motion tends to stay in motion; a body a rest tends to stay at rest. Over Memorial Day weekend I was a body at rest—lounging in the hammock, reading books and magazines, doing maybe one or two errands a day, tops. And when I awoke this morning to face the prospect of returning to work, I blanched. I wanted to just stay at rest until I remembered how very lucky I am to have a job, especially given the country's frightening economic indicators.
That got me thinking about what I'd do if I got laid off. First, I'd give my network of friends and family the bad news and see if they had any leads. Then I'd probably start writing one or two of these examiner columns each day, possibly even about the job search process. I'd finally finish filling out my online profile at some of the social networking sites I've joined. I'd pursue all promising freelance writing opportunities I came across. And I'd seek the help of local employment and networking resources.
Here are some resources I'd investigate:
Sonoma State University School of Extended Education
SoCo Library Career & Job Resources
Now I'm going to get in motion—brush my teeth, take a shower, decide what to wear to the office today. And I'm going to keep reminding myself how lucky I am to have a day job, one that's challenging and interesting, too. Best of luck to anyone reading this who's looking for work. My prayers are with you.
