Attention lit fans and writers both accomplished and aspiring. I just got word via the Redwood Writers' grapevine of a jam-packed literature festival happening Sat., May 2, up at Mendocino College in Ukiah. Dubbed "Celebration for Word Lovers," this free event will keep the images, allusions, stanzas and plots flowing with readings and workshops from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Featured authors include Hal Zina Bennett, Marc Bojanowski, Molly Dwyer, Jody Gehrman, Kim Green, Charlotte Gullick, Jean Hegland, Rebecca Lawton, Jordan Rosenfeld, Richard Schmidt, Terena Scott, Sheldon Siegel and Amy Wachspress.
Poets are well-represented too: Dan Barth, James BlueWolf, Armand Brint, Armando Garcia-Davila, Mary Norbert Korte, Jim Lyle, Linda Noel, Mary McMillan, David Smith-Ferri, Sandra Wade, Theresa Whitehill and Carolyn Wing-Greenlee.
Following is a list of slated workshops.
Writing Funny: How to Get Readers Laughing In Between All Those Big Ideas
Artful Revision: How to Create Poetic Prose
Write Free Playshop: Attracting Publication
Perspectives in Self-Publication and Independent Publishing
Writing That Novel: How to Stay Sane And Enjoy the Ride
Write What You Want to Know
To ensure you'll have a spot in workshops that grab your fancy, sign up in advance at www.mendocino.edu/LitFest/Sign-Up.html or call 707-468-3051 for more info. Mendocino College is at 1000 Hensley Creek Road in Ukiah.
And while you're up in Mendocino County, why not zip to the coast and spend the night writing away at The Inn at Schoolhouse Creek on Hwy. 1 in Little River? I stopped in there a couple of years ago and was charmed by the cabins and grounds, the giant chess set, the proximity to the ocean and the homemade food.
Then, to follow up in a literary vein, chow down at Marie Calendar's restaurant, 2460 Mendocino Ave., in Santa Rosa, any time between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. on May 4. When you're done, place your receipt in a designated box or basket in the lobby, and Redwood Writers will receive 15 percent. The funds will help cover expenses for a one-day lit fest the club is producing in Santa Rosa this fall.
