Some lazy Sunday afternoons, when the household chores and errands are done, and the sun is shining like it is today, the Pacific shores beckon, and some of us heed the call, knowing a walk along the sand while watching hawks and gulls soar above, smelling the salt air, watching the white caps break and spying sand dollars among seaweed washed ashore will feed us in ways nothing else can.
One ideal destination, especially for dog owners, is Kehoe Beach in West Marin, where canines on leash are welcome. Part of Point Reyes National Seashore and just off of Pierce Point Road, the beach is an easy (minimal change in elevation) 0.6-mile walk along a sandy trail from roadside parking.
My husband, Jim, and I took Romeo, our Maltese-Shih Tzu cross, there last week. Afterward, we viewed Thule Elk at Tomales Point and drove by Pierce Point Ranch. Established in 1858, Pierce Point is one of the oldest ranches on the Point Reyes Peninsula. Jim said back then people living at the ranch would have to pick up their mail at Point Reyes, a two-day trip. Another day, when we get an earlier start, we’ll take the 20-minute, self-guided tour of the grounds.
A slideshow of our day-trip is included with this article.
