It's a rare individual who can shift from being a commercial salmon fisherman in Alaska to award-winning winemaker in California. Bill Myers is such a person. He established White Oak Vineyards & Winery in Healdsburg in 1981 and has found over the last 28 years that "making wine is the fun part; selling it is where the work is."
But work is something Myers is more than willing to do, and with good humor, too, which shines through in the youtube video produced by Fat Belly Traveler and embedded with this article.
A small winery, White Oak produces 25,000 cases annually and is particularly known for its Chardonnay, Zinfandel and Sauvignon Blanc. Coming up Nov. 7 and 8, the winery is hosting a Wine and Food Affair, which offers intimate, wine-centric dining.
The winery's tasting room, at 7505 Highway 128 in Healdsburg, is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tasting is fee based, but the charge is refunded with purchase. For more information, visit www.whiteoakwinery.com or call 707-433-8429.
