The current production of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast – directed and choreographed by David James and Darren McDonnell – at Toby’s Dinner Theatre of Baltimore, 5626 O'Donnell St., runs through June 14.
Disney musicals are often geared toward children, but the seductive, feather-fingered Babette, played by Kate Williams, and flirtatious Frenchman Lumiere, played by co-director Darren McDonnell, keep adults well entertained during the performance of this popular musical.
Belle (Diana Jennings) sings wonderfully like Paige O’Hara, who provided the singing and speaking voice of Belle in Disney’s 1991 animated version.
One of the musical’s well-known songs, “Be Our Guest” is cheerfully done. Spoons, forks, napkins and teapots spin around as an entire kitchen comes to life onstage.
Belle and the egoist Gaston (David Jennings) have more chemistry than I remembered from the movie, but that could be because the pair met at Toby’s while performing in 1997 and married last year.
Candelabra Lumiere’s arms have a dancing flame, and a precious Chip, played by fourth-grader John Morrison, whose sweet face had the audience melting Sunday, rolls around in a tea cart with just his head exposed.
