Actually Acknowledges Mental Health in the US

As I have explored John McCain’s lack of mention of mental health care plans in his candidacy, I thought it would be prudent to also attempt to divulge the record of Democratic Presidential Candidate Barack Obama.

A Quote from his website reads:

  • Improve Mental Health Care. Mental illness affects approximately one in five American families. The National Alliance on Mental Illness estimates that untreated mental illnesses cost the U.S. more than $100 billion per year. As president, Obama will support mental health parity so that coverage for serious mental illnesses are provided on the same terms and conditions as other illnesses and diseases.

There is also mention of biomedical research into cures in aiding mental illness and other diseases.

The Comprehensive universal health care plan he proposes also has a provision for mental health coverage.

Though as equally important, the recent financial crisis does not only effect Wall Street but it also affects millions of Americans with mental illness. A few provisions under his economic plan also would be enormously helpful to families that suffer from mental illness and illnesses covered under such acts such as Down’s Syndrome or Alzheimer’s.

Expand the Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit: The Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit provides too little relief to families that struggle to afford child care expenses. Obama and Biden will reform the Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit by making it refundable and allowing low-income families to receive up to a 50 percent credit for their child care expenses

As well as seniors on fixed incomes that do not have to pay income tax, and greater protection for housing filed under the Section 8 agreement.

It is important to note, that while these things definitely need more tightening and definition, it is refreshing that at least one of the candidates acknowledges mental illness and its current state in America.
